Consultant Respiratory Physician.

 

Previous appointments included Clinical Director CResT Directorate, St James’s Hospital,Dublin, Medical Director, Peamount Chest Hospital, and Professor Respiratory Medicine, Dublin University (TCD) with responsibility for numerous inovations in clinical practice and medical education and hospital management.

He has an international track record of achievement in the area of smoking and health and on the causes, management and prevention of respiratory diseases, particularly air pollution, asthma, cancer and tuberculosis.

For the last 40 years, he has directed and co-ordinated research projects on these conditions, and for the past 20+ years he has led TFRI in policy-driven research (including the evaluation of ‘Smokefree Ireland’) and extensive international collaborations, generating some 400 + peer-reviewed publications and numerous published reports, books and chapters in books on TB, air pollution and Tobacco Control.

His first Irish-based research was in the field of air pollution when he described the increased mortality at St James’s Hospital associated with the Dublin smog, which led to the ban on burning of bituminous coal.

As Chairman of the Board of ASH Ireland (Action on Smoking and Health) for 12 years, he led the Health Alliance in Ireland which played a significant role in achieving Smokefree legislation in Ireland in 2004 through research and advocacy. He is a current Board Member and a previous Chairman of ENSP. He is a Past President of IUATLD (Europe) and Past Chair of the ERS Tobacco Control Committee.

He coordinated the FP7 PPACTE project on Tobacco Taxation and was a PI on Horizon 2020 projects, TackSHS, Silne-R, & TOB_G. He is PI of ESPAD Ireland,2015,2019, and 2024. https://www.tri.ie/publications.html and Orcid: https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2407-2263
