Alessandra Lugo is a researcher at Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research in Milan, Italy. She holds a PhD in Biomedical Statistics from the University of Milan and, since 2021, she coordinates the Unit of Biostatistics for Observational Epidemiology, within the Laboratory of Lifestyle Research at Mario Negri Institute.
Her research interests focus on epidemiology, tobacco control, public health, primary prevention, and the monitoring of lifestyle habits and risk factors. She has contributed to numerous national and international research projects in collaboration with leading experts in the field. Currently, she is Principal Investigator of a five-year project funded by the Italian Association for Cancer Research (AIRC), assessing cancer incidence and mortality attributable to smoking in Italy and evaluating the impact of tobacco control strategies.
Alessandra Lugo has extensive experience in the design and conduction of cross-sectional studies to monitor major risk factors for non-communicable diseases in Italy and Europe, including tobacco smoking, use of novel products, and exposure to second-hand smoke. She is also expert in the conduction of systematic reviews and meta-analyses, particularly focused on the association between cigarette smoking and cancer risk, with detailed evaluations of smoking status, intensity, duration and time since quitting.
She has authored or co-authored more than 160 scientific articles in peer-reviewed national and international journals (H-index: 43, Scopus, September 2025), underscoring her substantial contributions to tobacco control and public health research.
Dr. Lugo is a collaborator of the Global Burden of Diseases (GBD) study, a representative of the European Network for Smoking and Tobacco Prevention (ENSP), and a member of the executive board of the Italian Society of Tobaccology (SITAB), an non-profit scientific society dedicated to tobacco prevention, cessation and related diseases.
