BIO

Francesco Sardanelli is a physician, radiologist at the San Martino Hospital, Genoa (1987-1999), radiology director at the Research Hospital (IRCCS) Policlinico San Donato, San Donato Milanese, Milan, Italy (2001-2024); associate (2006-2015) and full professor of radiology (2015-2023), director of the postgraduate school in Nuclear Medicine (2008-2010) and Radiodiagnostics (2015-2021) at the University of Milan. Since 2009, he is Director of the European Network for Assessment of Imaging in Medicine in the context of the European Institute for Biomedical Imaging Research of the European Society of Radiology (ESR). Since 2022, he is member of the Comitato Scientifico of the Lega Italiana per la Lotta contro i Tumori (LILT) Milano Monza Brianza and since May 2024, he is the Scientific Coordinator of this Commitee. Since March 2025, he is President of the Italian Chapter of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM), Associazione Italiana Risonanza Magnetica in Medicina (AIRMM).

He was member of the European Society of Radiology (ESR) Research Committee (2006-2010; 2012-2015), member of the national council of the Italian Society of Medical and Interventional Radiology, SIRM (2006-2010), president of the European Society of Breast Imaging (2012-2015), and president of the Italian College of Breast Radiologists by SIRM (2014-2015).

In 2019-2021, he was member of the Italian group “Artificial Intelligence and healthcare biomedical research” of Smith Kline Foundation. In 2020, he was member of the external review group of the World Health Organization Rapid Advice Guide on radiological imaging in COVID-19 management. In 2023-2024, he served as president of the Ethics Committee of the San Raffaele Hospital, then Comitato Etico Territoriale Lombardia 1. He has been member of the Editorial/Advisory Board for several medical journals, including the The American Journal of Roentgenology, Clinical and Translational Imaging, European Radiology, Insight into Imaging, La Radiologia Medica, and The Breast. Since 2017, he is Editor-in-Chief of European  Radiology Experimental (Impact factor 3.6; Q1). He published 8 books and 47 book chapters.
